You crashed. You failed. I have to shoot you!

I looked at Mr. HD and told him how sorry I was for him. Sorry because he’s been serving me well for a couple years without a glitch. He was always quick to respond to my requests, quietly.

But this time he crashed, he failed. That’s ok with me, but I had to shoot him because of that. That’s what happened when a hard drive crashes and the owner happens to be a photographer. What other purpose can it serve, after all?

So here I am, screw driver in one hand, flashlight in the other. I took appart what used to be one of my several backup drives. Carefully unscrewing everything, putting pieces aside, one by one, discovering the unknown, the interior of my hard drive’s body.

This was a pretty interesting experience. Not having a hard drive crash, but opening it. I’ve always liked well crafted things, screws and shiny platters. Maybe that’s why I also love my Leica and its lenses. And now looking at all these pieces carefully placed on my desk, I’m thinking about the good old days of computing, even before the internet. And I can hear my friend Jean-François laugh and say with he deep voice: “Oh yeah, Mr. Norm..”!

I think experimenting with all kinds of objects can be very interesting. Sometime I just purchase little things for an eventual photo shoot, or shop around hardware store for sources of inspiration. But shooting my own hard drive is certainly something I haven’t thought of before. But don’t worry, my backup strategy proved to be more than appropriate and I lost nothing at all. Not even close! And now.. what do I do with all of these hard drive pieces? Hummm..

We ARE In Business

We ARE In Business!

After many months of thinking, questioning and wondering, I’m very happy and excited to announce that Normand Primeau Fine Art Photography is now established in France as a business! I’ve been doing this for almost 15 years in Canada, but the laws and rules in France are so different it got me by surprise. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to get things done. It is a very different approach to the photography business here, but there’s always a way out. Or in, for that matter.

I do have a plan. The first step was to get set up as an artist. The next step is wider and very stimulating, and will happen in the near future.

The weeks and months to come will be very busy and I look forward to all the good stuff that’s coming along. I won’t share with you my complete list of to-do’s, but as an old friend use to say to me: “Let’s Get Busy!”.

Goodlight!

Day In Cannes, Night In Nice (Carnival)

We’ve seen people working on the installation for a couple weeks now, but we didn’t know exactly when the Nice Carnival would happen. We spent the afternoon in Cannes for business (and fun too!) and decided to head toward Nice for dinner and an evening walk.

After a good meal in Old Nice, we decided to walk to the water and start from there. What a surprise we had when reaching la Promenade des Anglais (right from the Arcades). It was there, happening before our eyes : the Carnival! But we were at least 4-5 blocks away from it. Still, the cars were so big we could see them very well. And hear the music too. I took the camera out as soon as we reach the event and started shooting. There were people everywhere but everything seemed under control. Everybody seemed to enjoy the event, the music, the noise, the cars, etc. I was quite amazed by the size of it and had a warm feeling inside. As if I was part of it. Maybe that’s because I managed to move between cars as they were passing slowly, taking shots of everything interesting and colourful, even interacting with personages/actors on the cars. They could see me right in front of them, at many occasions they looked me in the eye (err.. lens) and smiled.

I followed the cars like that until they reached Place Masséna where most of the crowd was waiting. I kept moving and shooting and being part of the show, so close, brought many photo opportunities. The only drawback is the complexity of shooting at night with lots of light sources, people walking in all directions and more specifically manage manual focus all the time. Still, beside a bit of noise (higher ISO necessary) and some blurred pictures, it was a great opportunity and a wonderful experience. Once again, it’s a proof that I should keep bringing the camera with me all the time. You never know.

Behind Saint-Paul de Vence

The weather was not on the right side today but I decided to give it a try anyways and went to Saint-Paul. I spent a couple hours there and I made the right decision because it turned out to be an awesome opportunity to discover new areas and paths that led me to place I never went before. And I’m pretty sure most tourists don’t even know about it. I got some great classic shots of the village itself (architecture, fountains, etc.), but I’m glad I went off the usual track to find some great things to shoot. There is so much to discover in Saint-Paul, I could go there every day and come back with something new. And I was lucky enought to get some good light in the end.

Saint-Sylvestre In Monaco

These pictures were taken on December 31st in Monaco for the Saint-Sylvestre. I got there at the end of the afternoon and could see the evening come progressively. I found the light (and the lights) beautiful and had a great time walking around. This area is extremely popular at this time of the year, making it sometimes a bit complicated for framing with the camera. But with a bit of patience, everything falls into place. Oh, I forgot to mention the Churros, the hotdog and the chestnut were all excellent.. :-) Happy New Year everybody !

Villeneuve-Loubet (Village)

These shots where taken in Villeneuve-Loubet (Village) last week. I drive by this area quite a few times every week and noticed the river, the park and the bridge. Today I decided to give it a try and see what I can get there. I’m happy with the shots, but I mostly had a great time walking in this quiet area, thinking, seeing, breathing.

Going To Valberg

This was an impromptu photographic excursion to Valberg. It turned out to be a feast for the eyes. While there is nothing exceptional here, the vista in front of me was really awesome at every turn. Distance is deceptive in the mountains. It’s hard to give a sense of distance on a photograph. My advice? Just go there and see for yourself.

Saint-Paul de Vence

Here’s a series of frames I produced last week in Saint-Paul. I walked to the village and pretended I was there for the first time. Sometimes, the first time is memorable. I don’t know. But it was a great time and I enjoyed every moment.

A New Friend

I still can’t figure out why I woke up at 5:30am this morning. After all, I was tired when I went to bed last night at 11pm. And it’s been like that for a little while now. Go figure!

Anyways, I know for a fact now that getting up early allows to achieve much much more in one day. And since I’ve got plenty on my plate these days, why not? So I decided to get out of bed. I had no idea what the day would be, I had no specific plan, it was a blank page. I like blank pages. They allow you to do whatever you want. So early in the morning there’s not much sound outside, everything is quiet. I walked to my office window to look outside and see what the weather was like. Sunny! The window was slightly opened. Humm, that smell, unique. It whispers in my ear that I should get out and shoot some pictures. So I showered and got dressed, grabbed the camera and left home right away. When I do that I simply grab the G10 and walk around in the park to see what’s interesting.

You’d be surprise how much activity there is at around 6am in such a nice and wide park. Jogging, rollerblading, biking, people with their dogs.. and a photographer! But the best aspect is the sound, or lack of. It is so quiet. When I find myself in such context I’m just so relax and inspired. Everything seems different. The birds whistles are very present, the leaves in the trees, the water flowing on the rocks, the rubber tire of the bikes on the path, even your breath! Everything is so.. there! No rush, but no time to loose before the city gets busier with the usual activities.

So I decided to walk the bike path that follows the river from a distance of about 20 meters. I got some shots of the water and the shore, the trees. At one point my eye was caught by something unusual on the ground. I got closer and noticed it was a snail making its way across the path, slowly. Very slowly. So I decided to get a few shots of my new friend and relocated him 2-3 meters away in the grass. Hey, I saved his life! And then I saw another one and did the same thing. There was only two of them. Do they live in couple? Anyways, at that point I thought to myself that macro photography was certainly not what I expected to get  when I left home this morning to shoot the park, river and trees. Sometimes we have to look down and be ready to catch opportunities as they come. Too often we are looking for the big stuff, while there are tiny things that have so much to offer.

On my way back home I could see things getting busier, the cars on the road, the buses, more people in the park. I was happy I decided to get out of bed early and did all that. It’s always satisfying to get back home, transfer the files, look at them and enjoy the time we spent outside. And there’s plenty of time to do all these things we need to do until the end of the day.

It’s not always easy to get out of the comfort zone, espacially in the morning, but it’s really worth it. Just do it!

Bye,
Norm

Fingers Crossed (Again!)

Just a quick note to let you know that I registered my book “Death Valley – Land Of Rock” for Blurb’s 2010 Photography Book Now competition! It was registered in the Editorial category. If you remember, a couple weeks ago I registered my book “Lights On! – The Magic Of Lanterns” in the Fine-Art category.

Thanks everybody for your support!
